THE MODERN ORNAMENTAL STONES LABORATORY OF I.G.M.E.

The Institute of Geology and Mineral Exploration, in an effort to keep up with recent technological development in the field of laboratory services, is in process of establishing a modern and fully equipped laboratory, called LITHOS. This laboratory will carry out quality control and suitability tests for the ornamental stones. The LITHOS laboratory, located at Paeania of Attica area, is under the supervision of Marbles and Aggregates Section of the Economic Geology Department of I.G.M.E. and will function with highly experienced and qualified scientific personnel and technicians. For the time being, the installation works are under completion, whereas the procedures for the procurement of modern and fully automated and computerized equipment, are in progress.

This will eventually lead to a certified laboratory, providing high quality services. In the LITHOS laboratory we will very shortly be in the position to carry out reliable tests and to provide, in collaboration with other laboratories and departments of I.G.M.E., a full and complete series of laboratory determinations of the quality characteristics and properties of ornamental stones.

• AESTHETIC CHARACTERISTICS : colour and texture determinations, using computerized image analysis
• MINERALOGICAL AND CHEMICAL COMPOSITION.
• PHYSICAL, MECHANICAL AND TECHNICAL PROPERTIES (ASTM, DIN, UNI, BS, EN) :
  • Microhardness Knoop.
  • Real and Apparent Volume Mass, Specific Weight.
  • Porosity and water accessible Porosity Determination.
  • Absorption Coefficient.
  • Thermal linear expansion coefficient.
  • Compressive strength and modulus of rupture.
  • Modulus of elasticity
  • Abrasion resistance.
  • Impact test.
  • Compressive strength after freezing and thawing cycles.
  • Accelerated aging process by UV radiation and weather resistance tests.
