Research activity overview
Specific topics of the IGME's research activity are:
- Systematic basic surveys, which mainly include the compilation of the country's geological map at scales of 1:25.000, 1:50.000 and 1:500.000 and the
study of its geological structure and geodynamic regime.
- The carrying out of specialised surveys : geophysical, geochemical, photogeological, structural, economic geology, mineralogical and geothermal,
resulting, in many cases, in the compilation of thematic maps.
- Search, recording and evaluation of mineral raw materials (except hydrocarbons) with the aim to develop the country's energy potential, the
enlargement of its industrial basis and encouragement of productive investments.
- Search, recording and evaluation of the country's ground water supply, the rational usage of which will help the development of agricultural economy and will
satisfy urban and industrial needs of the country.
- Investigation and study of geotechnical problems, which are connected to either catastrophic phenomena(earthquakes, landslides) or the planning
and carrying out of technical and development projects (dams, communication projects, tunnels, etc.)
- The accomplishment of the above aims is achieved by different specialised surveys in the field (economic geology, mining, geophysical, marine geological investigations), whereas specific laboratory studies are carried out either independently or for the completion
of field work (petrographical, mineralogical, palaentological, sedimentological, chemical, research and studies in benefication and treatment of
ores, engineering geology - soil mechanics). The above surveys are completed with specific feasibility studies for the potential economic
development of ore-body resources.
- Finally, an organised library, a computer department, an archive of aerial photographs and topographical maps,a graphic arts laboratory,a publications
department and auxiliary services, are operating as Support Services in IGME.
